St. Joe’s Slips By East Brunswick 55-47

EAST BRUNSWICK , NJ--St. Joe’s proved why they are ranked 5th in the state on Tuesday night. It wasn’t because of Quenton DeCosey, who finished with a game high 21 points. It wasn’t because of star freshman Karl Towns who didn’t even score a single basket for the Falcons. It was because of their depth.

St. Joe’s was carried by Karim Awad, who had a career-high 15 points for the Falcons, eight of them coming in the first quarter alone. Danny Brix who has been overlooked most of this season with the addition of Towns in the lineup, had 14 points for the Falcons as he is closing in on the 1,000 point mark.

The game opened up with Awad putting the Falcons on the board with a lay-up through the paint. Amir Bell and Joe Ross would open up the scoring for the Bears, yet the two teams would spend most of the quarter changing leads. Rob Ukawuba and Abu Bestawros would also contribute to the Bears offense. St. Joe’s would close out the quarter scoring the last seven points, five of them coming from DeCosey.

The second quarter was a lot more intense as the Bears would give the Falcons all they had. Mike Summerer in his first game back from injury picked up right were he left off hitting the Bears first basket of the quarter. Brix along with Jalen Gilmore would continue to hit shots for the Falcons to keep the game within a possession. Amir Bell, Ukawuba and Joe Ross all scored consistently for the Bears in the second quarter. Jalen Gilmore would hit two free throws with less than a minute left in the half to secure a 28-25 lead for St. Joe’s going into the second half.

The Falcons would pull away in the third quarter as they would outscore the Bears 11-7 for the entire 8 minutes. East Brunswick was cold as ice from the floor, missing many open jumpers and three’s that if made, would have possibly given the game a different outcome. DeCosey and Brix took care most of the offense for St. Joe’s except for a Karim Awad three-pointer that came in the quarter’s final minute.

The fourth quarter would be the Bear’s final shot for the victory as Dan Leung, Ukawuba, Bell and Ross all tried to win the game for the Bear’s. The Bears would get it as close as 48-45 with two minutes to play, but the Bears inability to make shots caused them to foul. DeCosey would go to the line multiple times for the Falcons and would hit enough shots to secure the St. Joe’s victory.

St. Joe’s improves to 13-1 on the season while East Brunswick drops to 10-4. St. Joe’s hosts J.P Stevens Thursday night while East Brunswick hosts Old Bridge the same evening. Coach Dave Turco couldn’t have been more proud of his team’s victory saying, “Tonight we showed our depth, tonight we showed we’re a team.”
