Dosanjh Turns In Top Performance As Ramblers Win, 62-49 |
By Greg Machos
January 20, 2012CARTERET, NJ—Over the past two seasons at Carteret High School, Tanveer Dosanjh has done a solid job as the other option behind the likes of Avery Carter. However, in a key Blue Division Clash on Friday, Dosanjh was the star as he led the way with a game high 28 points in a Ramblers 62-49 victory. CHS won the first meeting between the two schools on opening night (48-45).
Dosanjh scored 17 points in the first half, and added 11 more in the second half as he connected on 12 field goals including three treys while also converting a traditional three point play. Carter chipped in with 17 points on six field goals and five free throws in a rare supporting role as the Rambler duo combined for 73 percent of the team's points.
Couple that with a solid defensive effort by the Ramblers on Spotswood's top scorer, Tommy Soulias, who was limited to just five points, and Carteret was able to come away with the win to earn a season sweep over the Chargers. Jake Dadika did his best to pick up the slack for Spotswood by scoring 20 points on eight field goals including two threes as well as two free throws while Dalonte Grant chipped in with 14 points on five field goals including two threes. Grant made both of his threes during a third quarter Charger run that closed the gap to five points.
Freshman Jaquan Robertson provided some energy to the Carteret cause with 8 points including two baskets in the third to help the Ramblers stay in front. Carteret outscored Spotswood in three of the four quarters played including a 20-9 outburst over the final 11:10 of the first half to break away from a 6-6 tie to take a 26-15 lead at the intermission. Spotswood had a 15-9 edge in points from beyond the arc, but Carteret had more two point field goals (21-13) and points from the free throw stripe (11-8). Both teams had seven players break into the scoring column and two players score in double figures.
Both teams started out slowly with no points for the first 1:44 of the contest, and only 12 points combined over nearly the first five minutes of the game. Dosanjh scored the first four points for the Ramblers to give them a 4-2 lead at the 5:30 mark. Robertson then added two foul shots at the 4:58 mark for a 6-2 lead before the Chargers charged back with a score from Soulias at the 4:20 mark, and a layup from underneath by Grant at the 3:10 mark for a 6-6 tie. The Ramblers then scored 6 of the final 7 points in the last 2:33 including a layup by Carter, and a rare four point play from Dosanjh as he hit a shot as he fell to the floor, and then got an offensive rebound off his missed free throw, and put it back in for a 12-7 lead heading into the second.
Dosanjh, who scored 12 of his team's first 16 points, continued his personal onslaught by opening the second period with a three for a 15-7 lead at the 7:48 mark. Spotswood pulled within three points over the next 1:25 on a layup and then a three from the right wing by Corey Brown (3 points) at the 6:23 mark. Dosanjh and Dadika exchanged one of two showings from the foul line before Ryan Oliver got on the board with a layup at the 4:30 mark. Carter made one of two free throws before a Chargers timeout at the 3:45 mark with the Ramblers in front 19-13. Following the stoppage, Elijah Torres swiped a steal for a layup, and Dosanjh connected for three from the right wing to give CHS a 24-13 advantage with under three minutes to play in the first half.
Both teams then exchanged scores the rest of the way for Carteret's 11 point lead at the intermission. The Ramblers opened the second half with a 6-5 run to increase their advantage to a dozen before Spotswood made a run. Over a span of about three minutes, the Chargers rallied with a 11-4 tear including a jumper from the left elbow by Grant at the 5:28 mark, a putback by Dadika at the 4:58 mark, and then back to back threes by Grant to narrow the deficit to 36-31. Spotswood wasn't able to get over that five point hump though. Dosanjh and Carter got baskets in the final minute to keep the Ramblers in front by the score of 42-35. Dosanjh then opened the fourth with a turnaround jumper from the left baseline at the 7:12 mark for a 44-35 lead.
From there the Chargers weren't able to get closer than six points, but they still managed to hang around within single digits until the final 3:10 of the game. There, Carteret began an 11-2 tear over a span of 1:44 to take a 59-43 lead. Carter sparked the run with a score from the left side. Kevin Van Dyke (3 points) followed up with a one of two showing from the foul line at the 2:31 mark, and then Dosanjh added layups at the 2:11 and 1:57 marks. He then capped his scoring night with a short jumper from the right side at the 1:37 mark before Joey Nigro (2 points) finished off the run with two free throws at the 1:26 mark.
With the victory, Carteret improved to 11-2 on the season including a 6-1 mark in the GMC Blue. Spotswood, which is yet to win against the top two teams in the Blue Division this year, fell to 9-3 overall including a 4-3 mark in divisional play. The defeat was also the first of the season on the road for the Chargers (8-1). View the play-by-play as well as video highlights from this contest in the blog.
