HawksBasketball Summer SlamFest--Week Four

Another W for Woodbridge

By Josh Cohen, Woodbridge Cable Television Network

Perth Amboy -- A monstrous dunk by Shamar Graves in the second half, and a splendid 16 point performance by John Cuozzo propelled the Woodbridge Barrons to a 58-23 victory over the Monroe Falcons at Perth Amboy High School on Wednesday night.
Graves, who scored nine points, slammed home an electrifying one-handed jam off a fast break with less than eight minutes remaining to open the eyes of those in attendance.  He also gathered seven rebounds, and a blocked shot.
Cuozzo, who scored nine of this 16 from beyond the arc, and Casey Mack, who collected eight points, two rebounds, and two steals, have potential to be the most improved backcourt in the 2004-05 Greater Middlesex Conference season.
"We have much more team chemistry this year," Mack said after the game.  "Our teams' ability to get on fast breaks, and move the ball around are improved from last season."
By providing intense defensive pressure on the perimeter and in the backcourt, Alphonse Baja scored eight of his 12 points off steals.  He may be a secret weapon for the Barrons this season, as his quickness and athleticism could wear down opponents.
Woodbridge delivered effective passes to one another throughout, including a sweet dish from Cuozzo to a wide-open Temmy Adeleye for an easy basket late in the game.
The Barrons out-rebounded the Falcons, who only had five players in uniform, 26-12.
Head coach Scott Sienkiewicz must be proud of this team's hard work and determination, as he has his team at a 5-2 record in the HawksBasketball Summer SlamFest.  See the latest standings and scores.

HawksBasketball Summer SlamFest--Week Four

Rutgers Prep Back On Top With Win Over Barrons While Chiefs Lose

The Argonauts of Rutgers Prep leapfrogged back into first place as they defeated Woodbridge, 50-41 while Piscataway lost in a shocker to North Hunterdon, 41-39. Meanwhile, in other action, there was a Jermaine Clark sighting at the SlamFest as he helped propel Perth Amboy to a 71-47 win over Chatham. The other game saw Plainfield down North Brunswick, 50-33.

In the Rutgers Prep victory over Woodbridge, the tandem of Mike Manning (16 points, 6 rebounds, 7 steals, 3 assists) and Corey Wilburn (15 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 2 assists) combined with the effort of Joe Leeds, who had 8 points and 13 rebounds sparked the Argonauts to the win while Casey Mack continued his fine play this summer with 18 points for the Barrons in a losing cause.

North Hunterdon pulled out a squeaker over the Chiefs by virtue of a 12 point, 4 rebound, and 2 steal performance by Steve Wilson while teammate Kevin Kitchen chipped in with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Piscataway was led by soon to be seniors Brandon Wilkinson, who had 10 points, and Allen Hairston, who collected 6 points and 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, Clark helped spark Amboy with 13 points in his first appearance in nearly a month while teammate E'lon Heard had a stat stuffer night with 15 points, 4 rebounds, a block and a steal in the 71-47 win over still winless Chatham.

Despite 18 points from Vinay Wunnava, the North Brunswick Raiders fell to the Plainfield Cardinals of the Watchung Conference as the Cards got a 11 point, 9 rebound, 2 steal, and a block performance from Kevin Womack. In addition, Aquil Smith chipped in with a nice performance of his own as he collected 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists, and a steal in the 50-33 win. Plainfield moves into second place a half game back of Rutgers Prep and one up in the loss column ahead of Piscataway and Woodbridge. See the latest standings and scores.
