Lots Of Great Action At Rebounds |
In our first ever appearance at the Rebounds Summer Festival in Neptune, NJ, GMC Hoops finally got the opportunity to watch Sayreville in Summer League action for the first time in several years. Well, actually, we almost didn't. Sayreville was scheduled to play against Middletown North at 7:15 PM, but due to some problems including heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area, the Bombers only had two players at the scheduled start time.
Meanwhile, over on the court adjacent to the court that Sayreville was supposed to play Middletown North, Brick Memorial was set to play Middletown South. The only problem with that was that Middletown South also didn't have enough players. So, the referees improvised, and had Brick Memorial take on Middletown North while Sayreville's two players, who were Tim Wojcik and Waclaw Dziadosz, were grouped together with players from other teams to play what Middletown South had as well as players from other teams.
Eventually, around the halfway mark of the first half of this pickup game, Sean Reeves and a couple other Sayreville players arrived as well as some players from Middletown South. So, we weren't disappointed after all. Reeves played very well while Wojcik collected 7 points including a three pointer from the right baseline late in the game, three rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Dziadosz chipped in with a decent all around game including 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals, and an assist as the Bombers won, 57-45 after being up only by two at halftime.
In the other ad-hoc game, Brick Memorial fell behind early as Middletown North grabbed a 25-18 halftime lead, and then held the Dragons at bay to get the 42-34 victory. Meanwhile, in earlier games, St. John Vianney, who has a former GMC plyaer in Pat Dineen (Old Bridge) on their roster, led 18-17 at the half only to succumb to a 31-14 second half surge by the Patriots of Freehold Township, and lost 48-32.
Dineen had a three pointer in the second half to cut the gap to six at 29-23 with 9:30 remaining in the game, but Freehold Township went on a 7-2 spurt to increase the lead to double digits for the first time in the game at 36-25 with 6:35 left to play, and the Lancers never recovered. The Patriots closed out the contest with a 12-7 run to shape the final, 48-32 winning margin.
At the same time, a great game was going on between Rumson Fair-Haven and Colts Neck. In a game that went to overtime and saw seven lead changes and four ties from the 16:35 mark of the second half, the Cougars of Colts Neck edged the Bulldogs by a 5-2 margin in the extra session to pull out the 36-33 victory. This was after the Bulldogs forced the extra period by knocking in a shot with only 13 seconds to play in regulation to make the score 31-31.
In the next set of games that started at 6:15 PM, Matawan overcame an early 7-0 run by Toms River East, and a 22-11 deficit with 7:32 to go in the first half to win over the Raiders by a 53-46 score. The Huskies, which only had one point in the first five and a half minutes of the contest, outscored the Raiders from Ocean County by a 27-21 margin the rest of the first half, and then surged past them 25-14 in the second half for the victory.
Likewise, Red Bank Catholic appeared to be off to a slow start in their game against Point Pleasant Boro. After being tied at 6-6 with 16:14 to go in the first half, the Panthers from Ocean County went on a 7-2 run sparked by a three pointer with 15:58 to go before intermission to take a 13-8 lead. However, Red Bank Catholic was able to mount a comeback as Point Pleasant Boro's offense went into hibernation.
Unable to score a point for approximately eight and a half minutes, the Panthers fell behind the Caseys as Red Bank Catholic went on a 11-0 run during that 8:30 stint to take a 19-13 lead before Point Boro closed the half with a 7-0 tear to not only get their offense going again, but take a 20-19 lead going into the break. In the second half, Point Boro seemed again to have control of the game on a 7-4 run to open the half for a 27-23 lead.
However, after being up 34-29 with about ten minutes to go in the contest, the Point Boro offense went dormant again as RBC went on a 14-0 surge to take a commanding 43-34 lead with 6:44 left to play. After that, the Caseys were never really threatened again as they pulled out the victory, 55-44. Back to the other game, Matawan used a key 13-6 run over a 6:30 span in the first half to climb back into the contest at 28-24 with 1:02 left, and then the Huskies continued to stay close in the second half before pulling the game out.
