Batts Shines As Patriots Roll Past Wardlaw, 60-37

NORTH EDISON , NJ—The Patriots of Amboy Tech started 2012 just as it had ended 2011: On a roll. On Thursday afternoon, the Pats won their fifth straight game with a 60-37 decision over Wardlaw in a GMC Gold Division matchup. Senior guard, Malcolm Batts led the charge with 23 points on eight field goals including two threes, and five free throws. Batts now needs 125 points to join teammate Rashad Adams on the Amboy Tech list of 1,000 point scorers.

Speaking of Adams, scored 13 points on five field goals and three foul shots to raise his career total to 1,205 points. The senior forward also amassed 21 rebounds as well as 3 assists and a steal. Batts also collected 8 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 assists, and a block. Wilfredo Nieves also scored in double figures with 12 points on six field goals while picking up 3 rebounds, a steal, and a block.

Kelvin Perez (3 points) dished out 6 assists and swiped three steals for the winners. Justen Davis led Wardlaw with a team high 16 points on six field goals and four foul shots along with 5 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals, and an assist. Freshman guard, Mike Newman chipped in with 7 points in a losing cause for the Rams. The Patriots outscored Wardlaw in three of the four periods played including a 19-5 showing in the first period, and a 15-8 effort in the fourth period.

Amboy Tech had 24 field goals including four threes while making eight free throws. Meanwhile, Wardlaw had 13 field goals including two threes along with 9 foul shots. The Pats had eight different players get into the scoring column while Wardlaw had six. P.A. Tech enjoyed a 12-6 edge in points scored from beyond the arc. For the game, the Patriots tallied 38 rebounds, 11 assists, 11 steals, and 2 blocks. The Rams picked up 18 boards, 5 steals, 2 blocks, and an assist.

Amboy Tech was in control the entire way with a 50-31 lead a little more than five minutes to go in the game. The Patriots then finished the game with a 10-6 run including a layup at the buzzer. The home team got a three pointer from Newman, and 3 of 4 from the foul line by fellow freshman, John Pohopin during this stretch while the visitors got four points from Batts and a three pointer from the left wing to take a 57-34 lead.

With the victory, Perth Amboy Tech improved to 5-2 overall on the season including a 3-2 mark in conference play and a 2-2 record in the GMC Gold to tie them with Dunellen, South Amboy, and Wardlaw, which dropped to 2-4 overall with the loss. Amboy Tech also defeated Dunellen earlier this season.
