Amboy Tech Surges Past E.B. Tech Behind Adams For Title, 71-58

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ—After starting the season at 1-2, Perth Amboy Tech won its third straight, and now is on much better footing as it heads into the new year and a return to Gold Division play. Paced by four players scoring in double figures and two players with double digit rebounds, the Patriots overcame a 20-16 first quarter deficit by outscoring East Brunswick Tech in each of the last three periods to defeat the Tigers by the score of 71-58 in the Championship Game of the NJTAC Tourney.

Senior forward, Rashad Adams played a superb game for the Pats with 22 points and 14 rebounds along with 3 assists and 3 steals. Adams now has 1,192 points for his career at Amboy Tech. Fellow senior, Malcolm Batts continued to push toward 1,000 points for his career as well with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Saul Rosa chipped in with 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block, and Kelvin Perez added 11 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals. Wilfredo Nieves also contributed with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists, and a block.

Dequan Calimese led all scorers wth a game high 23 points for E.B. Tech on eight field goals including three treys, and four free throws. Mike Hardy chipped in with 19 points on seven field goals including a three as well as four foul shots. Senior forward, Branden Lenahan added 11 points on five field goals and a free throw. The Tigers had more points from beyond the arc (12-6) and at the foul line (10-3), but the Patriots had more two point field goals (31-18). As a team, Amboy Tech had 40 rebounds, 19 assists, 17 steals, and 3 blocks. The Patriots used a 48-32 surge over a span of 19:37 to take a 64-52 lead with 4:23 left.

East Brunswick Tech tried to cause some mayhem by trapping in the last four plus minutes, but could not get closer than ten points on several occasions.Amboy Tech actually outscored the Tigers by a 7-6 margin during that stretch. Highlighting the run were baskets by Batts, Nieves, and Adams while Batts also added one of two free throws. E.B. Tech got scores from Lenahan off an assist by Hardy to close the gap to 64-54 at the 4:07 mark, a short jumper on the follow by Calimese for a 66-56 Amboy Tech lead, and then a pair of free throws by Hardy for a 68-68 Patriots lead with 1:47 to play. On a couple of occasions, the Tigers had chances to get closer, but either Rosa or Nieves came up with a big stop defensively.

With the victory, Amboy Tech won its first holiday title since 2008 when it defeated Piscataway Tech in that year's NJTAC Holiday Tourney. The Patriots reached the final the following season, but lost to Sussex Tech (52-45). Last year, Piscataway Tech won the title. This year, the Raiders pulled out of the tourney to play in the Prime Time Shootout/ESCIT Holiday Tournament at Trenton Catholic. The win was the third straight for the Patriots, and their second over a GMC foe this season. Amboy Tech improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play while E.B. Tech fell to 2-4 overall and 0-4 in conference.
