Amboy Tech Slips Into Second Place In National Division |
There were only two nightcap games on the schedule on Tuesday night at the Middlesex County College Summer League in Edison. Both games, which were played in the National Division, had an impact on the top of the standings as Perth Amboy Tech slipped into first place by virtue of their 30-24 win over Union Catholic of the Mountain Valley Conference while Somerset Vo-Tech dropped its third straight game after winning four in a row to start the summer with a 38-24 loss to previously winless Watchung Hills.
in the game between Watchung Hills and Somerset Vo-Tech, the Warriors pulled off the surprise by first jumping out to a 14-11 lead with just two minutes to go in the first half. The maintained that three point lead at 16-13 with a bit less than a minute to go in the first half, and then increased it to the halftime margin of five at 18-13 as they closed the opening half with a 4-2 spurt. Then, in the second half, Watchung Hills broke away for good with a 9-2 burst to take a 27-15 lead with 8:18 to go.
The Warriors then put the game away with a 9-6 run that gave them a commanding 36-24 victory with only 36 seconds to play. Both teams combined for five points down the stretch for the 38-24 final. Meanwhile, Patriots of Amboy Tech fell behind at the half as Union Catholic took a 15-14 lead at the break. However, Amboy Tech took the upper half early on in the second half with a 4-0 run to take an 18-15 lead with 16:15 remaining in the game.
Then, after Union Catholic cut into the deficit with a basket to make the score 18-17, they missed an opportunity to take the lead, and Amboy stayed on top at 18-17 with 12:40 remaining. UC would eventually restle the lead back on a layup for a 19-18 lead despite missing a chance to convert the three point play as they missed the free throw. Amboy Tech, which did a fine job hitting free throws down the stretch, connected on two from the charity stripe for a 20-19 lead with 10:28 left in the contest.
The Patriots, who took advantage of their athleticism, grabbed a number of offensive rebounds, which resulted in two more free throws for a 22-19 lead with only 9:02 to play. Then, Perth Amboy Vo-Tech increased the lead to five over the next 2:47 with a basket for a 24-19 score with 6:16 to go. The Patriots seemed to show signs of crumbling as they called two quick timeouts within a 15 second span, and Union Catholic closing the lead to 25-20 with only 2:02 to play.
The Patriots though would regain their composure though, and finish the game with a 5-4 run to pull out the victory, 30-24. As a result, Amboy Tech moves into second place a full game behind Bishop Ahr as of the time of this report with a 5-2 overall reocrd on the summer.
