Dunellen Wins In Double OT While Ahr And St. Joe's Only Unbeatens Left

The third week of action completed down at Middlesex County College on Thursday night with Dunellen going double overtime before defeating Watchung Hills, 59-53, to reach the .500 mark again this summer. Meanwhile, St. Joseph's and Bishop Ahr are now the only two undefeated teams left as the Trojans downed Somerset Vo-Tech, 33-24 to hand the Jaguars their second straight loss of the summer.

St. Joseph's stayed undefeated by coming up with a 52-40 victory over St. Peter's. Both Ahr and St. Joe's are 5-0 while Dunellen is 3-3. In other action, Highland Park pounded South Amboy to stay within striking distance of St. Joe's with a 45-15 win. The Guvs are still winless on the summer. Perth Amboy Vo-Tech edged Spotswood, 36-34. Edison continued to play well with a 39-28 victory over Monroe, and South River and Roselle Park continue to come along this summer with wins on Thursday night as well. Middlesex County College Summer League--Week Three

Edison Jolts Somerset Vo-Tech From Ranks of Unbeaten While Spotswood Rallies To Win

It was a pretty good night for teams in the Greater Middlesex Conference at the 2004 Middlesex County College Summer League on Tuesday. Well, at least the three games that we saw in the nightcap action. GMC teams won all three contests in the nightcap as Edison rallied from behind to knock Somerset Vo-Tech from the ranks of the unbeaten, 28-24, and Spotswood used a 33-21 showing in the second half to come from behind to defeat Union Catholic.

The first game we watched though paired off two teams from the GMC, East Brunswick Vo-Tech of the Gold Division, and St. Joseph's of the Red Division. With Sean Baptiste helping out the Falcons on this night, St. Joe's jumped out to a 16-5 lead early, and were never really threatened in a 61-26 drubbing of the Tigers. Padding their lead with a 10-2 burst to close the first half scoring, the Falcons went up 26-7 at halftime as they got a score in at the buzzer.

In the second half, St. Joseph's picked up right where they left off with a 10-7 edge over the first 4:45 of the half for a commanding 36-14 lead with only 15:15 left on the clock. The Falcons increased their lead to 25 on a 13-10 run over a nearly ten minute span to make the score 49-24 with 5:30 left to play. St. Joe's then finished out the contest with a 12-2 spurt to make the final score, 61-26 to go 4-0 on the summer.

The next game, saw Spotswood fall behind early to Union Catholic by a 12-6 margin with 8:35 left in the opening half. UC maintained that six point lead at 14-8 with 5:46 to play before Spotswood ct into the lead with a 4-3 run to make the score 17-12 with 2:10 to go before intermission. The Chargers had problems holding on to rebounds down in their own end of the court, which led to second chance opportunities from their Mountain Valley Conference opponent. Union Catholic went into the break still leading by five, 19-14.

In the second half, the pace picked up significantly as Spotswood cut into the lead again with a 12-10 run over the first 6:57 of the new half to make the score 29-26 with 13:03 to go. Both teams were going up tempo in an exchange of transition baskets during this span. However, the Chargers would take over the contest with a 15-8 surge that gave them a four point margin, and their first lead in a while, 41-37 with 3:04 to go.

Spotswood then increased its lead to six after a score that followed missed opportunities by Union Catholic at the other end. Now, the Chargers had a commanding 43-37 lead with less than two minutes left in the game. Spotswood would finally put the game away with a three point play with 1:11 left to take a 46-37 lead. Union Catholic then closed out the contest by scoring three of the game's final four points to make the final score, 47-40 in favor of Spotswood, which is now at .500 on the summer at 2-2.

The best we saved for last as an Edison team, which started the summer with a tough loss to Bishop Ahr in the final seconds, a four point loss to Dunellen, and a struggle with Watchung Hills before getting the win, held their composure, and showed patience and discipline throughout much of their contest against Somerset Vo-Tech, which had come into the contest with the league's best record at 4-0.

Somerset Vo-Tech's Jaguars jumped out in front at halftime, 15-11 in a low scoring affair. In the second half, Edison started things with a 5-2 run to cut the Jaguar lead to 17-16 with 12:24 remaining in the game. However, Somerset Vo-Tech rebounded with a 4-0 run with 9:00 left to make it 21-16, which was their biggest lead of the entire second half. The Eagles would come back though, and tie the game up with a 5-0 run to make the score 21-21 with 6:15 left to play.

After the Jaguars quickly took the lead back on the succeeding possession, 23-21, the Eagles took their first lead of the second half, and perhaps the game, 25-23 with 2:56 left to play, on a 4-0 spurt over a 3:19 span. Over the next 1:04, the Jags had opportunities to tie, or perhaps take the lead, but were unable to convert foul shots as they went 1 of 4 at the charity stripe over that span, and still trailed Edison, 25-24 with 1:52 remaining.

After an Edison timeout with 1:33 left, the Eagles were able to get a steal on the defensive end, but when they tried to convert that into a score, they were stopped by an offensive foul with exactly one minute to go. Nevertheless, Somerset Vo-Tech couldn't take advantage as the Eagles converted three of four free throws over the final 18 seconds of the contest to pull off a huge win, 28-24. The victory puts Edison in a four way tie for third place at the time of this report (we are still waiting for results of other games) while Somerset Vo-Tech falls to second place at 4-1.
