Middlesex County College Summer League--Week Two

Somerset Vo-Tech Now 4-0 While St. Joe's Knocks Off A.L. Johnson

Somerset Vo-Tech continues to play surprisingly well at the 2004 Middlesex County College Summer League in Edison. They claimed their fourth straight victory to start the summer by defeating a game Perth Amboy Vo-Tech in overtime 50-40. Amboy Tech is now 2-2 on the summer.

Meanwhile, previously undefeated A.L. Johnson Regional of Clark fell to St. Joseph's by a final score of 64-54. The Falcon's win combined with a 24-21 victory by Highland Park, sets up a two way tie in the American Division with A.L. Johnson only a half game back at 3-1. In other action, Bishop Ahr remained undefeated, and a half game behind Somerset Vo-Tech in the National Division by virtue of an easy win over Watchung Hills, 45-23.

In addition, Dunellen won a thrilling game over Edison, 56-52 while Monroe broke into the win column with a hard fought victory against a Union Catholic team, which has now lost two games in a row. East Brunswick Vo-Tech climbed back up to .500 by almost doubling up on Gold Division rival South Amboy, 35-17. The Guvs are still winless on the summer at 0-4. Finally, Roselle Park edged St. Peter's, which is also still winless at 0-3, by the score of 39-33. See the latest standings and scores.

Middlesex County College Summer League--Week Two

Edison Comes From Behind For First, 32-30

After giving up the lead to Watchung Hills with 3:00 after the Warriors rallied with a 16-8 spurt to open the second half, the Edison Eagles came from behind to win their first game of the summer at the Middlesex County College Summer League by the score of 32-30 on Tuesday night in Edison.

Meanwhile, in other night cap action, Somerset Vo-Tech and Union Catholic engaged in a close battle as the two teams, which both came into the contest undefeated, almost gave us another thrilling ending. The Jaguars had built up an 18-10 halftime lead, and seemed to have the game in hand with an 11-8 run to open the second half scoring for a 29-18 lead with 5:00 remaining.

However, Union Catholic fought back with a 10-3 run to pull within three points, but couldn't tie the game up as they ran out of time. The other nightcap saw Roselle Park run their fast break game to perfection as they rolled to a 23-10 halftime lead, and never looked back in their 47-21 lopsided win over East Brunswick Vo-Tech. Both of those teams are now 1-2 on the season as EBVT won its first game by forefeit on Thursday night, June 24th, to Middlesex.

Arriving late to all three games, we saw that Edison had grabbed the early 3-1 lead with 12:15 left to play in the first half. The Eagles then padded that lead with a 9-6 run to make the score 12-7 with 6:38 left. Both teams closed the half even as the Eagles clinged to their five point lead 17-12. In the second half, Watchung Hills dominated most of the way with a 16-8 showing over the first 17:00 to take their first lead of the contest, 28-25.

However, over the next minute, Edison would rally as the Eagles came back with a bucket at the 2:42 mark, and one of two free throws at the two minute mark to tie the game at 28-28. Despite missing a front end of a one and one with 23 seconds remaining, the Eagles still managed to come away with the win with a 4-2 spurt for the 32-30 victory to even their record at 1-1. Watchung Hills is still winless at 0-3.

In the other nailbiter of the night, the Jaguars of Somerset Vo-Tech, who are playing their best basketball at MCC since GMC Hoops starting covering the league in the summer of 2000, jumped out to the early lead on a 9-3 tear over the game's first 7:20. Union Catholic then tried to climb back into things with a 4-3 stretch over the next 7:07 to make the score 12-7 with 5:33 left as the Jags called for time.

Somerset Vo-Tech seemed to regain their composure out of the timeout as they closed the first half scoring with a 6-3 run to make the score 18-10 at halftime. Then, in the second half, they opened up their lead to 11 as they outscored Union Catholic, 11-8 over the first 15:00 of the final period for what appeared to be a commanding 29-18 lead. But, Union Catholic fought back.

Deploying fullcourt pressure, UC closed the contest with a 10-3 burst as they essentially shut the Jaguar attack down. First, they cut the lead to seven with 2:39 to play on a 4-0 spurt to make the score 29-22 as Somerset Vo-Tech called for time. Union Catholic then went on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 31-28 with about 15 seconds to go. However, Union Catholic wasn't able to get themselves into position for a tying three pointer, and the Jaguars of Somerset Vo-Tech got the win to have their best start in the five years we've been covering the MCC Summer League. UC dropped to 2-1.

In the other nightcap, Roselle Park rolled out to an 18-8 lead with 3:48 to go in the first half as they took advantage of a porous East Brunswick Vo-Tech defense that allowed numerous coast to coast layups and other easy baskets. The Panthers then closed the first half scoring with a 5-2 spurt for a 23-10 halftime lead. EBVT would never really recover after that.

Roselle Park started the second half with an 8-3 spurt over the first 8:25 of the new half for a commanding 31-13 lead, and then grew their lead to twenty at 39-19 with 4:41 left as they continued to run the floor extremely well while the Tigers just couldn't by the basket at the other end as they struggled terribly from the perimeter. Roselle Park then closed out their first victory of the summer with an 8-2 burst for the 47-21 final. Both teams again are now 1-2 on the season. See the latest standings and scores.
