Middlesex County College Summer League--Week One

Bishop Ahr Edges Edison While Union Catholic Rolls

After the Edison Eagles had tied the game at 29-29 on an 8-3 spurt over 5:05 stretch of the game, Bishop Ahr was fouled with four seconds left in the contest, and got one of two free throws to pull out a 30-29 victory over the Eagles in one of the nightcap games at the second night of action at the Middlesex County College Summer League in Edison.

Bishop Ahr, which had jumped out to a 10-2 lead, and held the Eagles to just those two points for the first 16:00 or so of the game, had a 21-14 lead with 14:36 to go, and a 26-21 lead with just 8:35 to go before Edison rallied back. The Eagles, which had a bye on opening night, used a 9-5 run over the final four minutes and change of the first half to close within 15-11 at halftime.

The Trojans, which rolled past Perth Amboy Vo-Tech, 63-42 on opening night, are now tied for first place with Union Catholic with a 2-0 record. Speaking of Union Catholic, they jumped out to a 13-6 lead with 4:22 to go in the first half of their game against Dunellen, and then closed the half with a 6-0 run to make it 19-6 at the half. Then, UC started the second half with an 8-0 run for a 14-0 surge as Dunellen didn't get a point for approximately twelve minutes until they got a free throw with 12:15 left in the game to make the score 27-7.

From there, Union Catholic, a member of the Mountain Valley Conference, was never threatened as they moved up to 2-0 with a 41-16 victory over the Destroyers. Other games from the evening saw Perth Amboy Vo-Tech surge past Watchung Hills by the score of 61-32, South River double up South Amboy, 48-24, and A.L. Johnson became the third team to go 2-0 on the summer at MCC as the Crusaders routed Roselle Park by the score of 69-29. See the latest standings and scores.

Middlesex County College Summer League--Opening Night

A.L. Johnson and Somerset Vo-Tech Roll To Opening Day Wins

Two Greater Middlesex Conference teams got off to tough starts at the opening of the 2004 Middlesex County College Summer League in Edison on Tuesday night. In two nightcap games, Somerset Vo-Tech, and A.L. Johnson rolled to easy victories over Monroe and Middlesex respectively. Keep in mind though that Monroe had their Junior Varsity team playing as their varsity team is competing at the HawksBasketball Summer SlamFest in Perth Amboy.

Both the Jaguars and the Crusaders went about their easy wins in different ways. For Somerset Vo-Tech, which improved somewhat last year, jumped out to a 28-9 lead at halftime, and then cruised to a 49-23 win over Monroe while A.L. Johnson, which is located in Clark, and plays in the Mountain Valley Conference, struggled to an 18-15 halftime lead before surging away to victory 48-23 over Middlesex with a 30-8 outburst in the second half.

Middlesex, which also participated in this year's Kean Team Week, did not participate in any summer leagues to our knowledge last year. Both A.L. Johnson and Somerset Vo-Tech participated at Middlesex County College last summer, and the Jaguars have been in this particular league since GMC Hoops began covering it back in the summer of 2000. Meanwhile, in other action, St. Joseph's was scheduled to play against South Amboy in another nightcap game, but the Guvs failed to show.

Other games from earlier in the day saw Bishop Ahr rout Perth Amboy Vo-Tech, 63-42, Dunellen edge Spotswood, 31-29, South River pound the Panthers of Roselle Park, 51-25, Highland Park roll past East Brunswick Vo-Tech, 43-28, and Union Catholic downed Watchung Hills, 49-28. See the latest standings and scores.
