January 28, 2012METUCHEN , NJ--Despite 28 points from Quenton DeCosey and 20 from Karl Towns, for St. Joes, the night belonged to senior Danny Brix. Brix joined the 1,000 point scorer’s club Saturday night getting the 11 points he needed to reach the feat. St. Joe’s would easily defeat Marist 69-52 with Brix finishing with 12 points. Marist star Manny Suarez finished with 13 points.
The game started out as a battle of the big guys with Towns and Suarez, leading their teams offense from the start of the game. Towns and Suarez, are both very similar players in the fact that they are both 6 foot 10, and that they both have great jump shots from outside the arc. Towns would hit two three-pointers in the opening quarter to pace the St. Joe’s offense to a 17-9 lead going into the second quarter. Brix would get on the board with a pair of free throws in the quarter’s last two minutes.
Suarez opened up the second quarter with a lay-up to cut the St. Joe’s lead to 6 points. Towns would answer with another pair of three’s to give him 18 points going into halftime. Brix went into halftime with 5 points after hitting a jumper and a free throw to make him six points short of the accomplishment. St. Joe’s led 38-20 at halftime.
The third quarter was all Brix as he opened the second half with the team’s first five points to make St. Joe’s lead 43-20. Darryl Black would add a free throw for the Royal Knights and Karim Awad would add a lay-up before Brix got fouled with 3:23 left in the quarter. Brix needed only one free throw to reach 1,000 and he would end up missing both. Afterword Brix say of the moment “In my four years playing high school basketball I’ve never been nervous to take a free throw until then.”
Quenton DeCosey would make a pair of buckets to add to St. Joe’s lead, while Martinez and Suarez would add a pair of buckets to try and get Marist back in the game.
Finally, with 1:09 left in the quarter, Brix would hit a three to give him the milestone. After receiving a plaque from Coach Turco, Brix would be embraced by his teammates and then make his way into the stands to celebrate with his family. When the game resumed, DeCosey would personally congratulate Brix with a dunk through traffic. Anthony White would hit a three with 27 seconds left in the quarter, to make the score 53-39. DeCosey would hit a three with under 5 seconds left to give St. Joe’s a 19 point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams would get their points from a vast amount of players in the game’s final quarter. The Royal Knights would get points from Andy Etienne, Jarron Smith, Martinez and White among others, while St. Joe’s would get their points from Towns DeCosey, Jalen Gilmore and Matt Greene. It was Greene’s pair of free throws with under a minute left that would finish St. Joe’s scoring for the evening. The Royal Knights would hit a three in the game’s last five seconds to make the final score 69-52.
St. Joe’s improves to 15-1 while Marist drops to 8-7. Brix was more than happy to pass the milestone saying “I’m glad to have gotten it over with, now its time to focus on counties and states.” View the play-by-play from the game in the blog.
