WOODBRIDGE, NJ--Things may be turning around for the Barrons of Woodbridge High School. After a 1-5 start, the Barrons took out some of their frustrations on a young Metuchen team over the weekend, and continued it against crosstown rival, J.F. Kennedy. After losing two straight seasons to the Mustangs, Woodbridge decided it had enough. The Barrons got a game high 22 points from senior forward Keith Hughes to post a 62-37 victory.

Hughes, who looks much better after suffering an ankle injury in the season opener at McCarrick, put the exclamation point on the win with a two handed jam while being fouled for a conventional three point play in the middle of the fourth quarter. Hughes, a three year varsity player, had six field goals including two threes while making eight free throws. Frontcourt mate, Kyle Pearson chipped in with 16 points on seven field goals and two foul shots. Duquan Bailey, who got back into the lineup recently added 9 points while Jared Pearson put a bow on the win with five points after the reserves got into the game.

Leading the way for the Mustangs in a losing cause was sophomore Kyle Alvarez, who had 13 points on four field goals including a three along with four free throws. Zach Buchholz chipped in with 6 points while Steve Alvarez, Shabas Clarke, and Josh Kamenas added 5. Woodbridge, which outscored Kennedy in three of the four quarters played, took control of the contest right away with a 17-8 showing in the first period followed by a 14-5 showing in the second to take a 31-13 lead at the intermission. The Barrons then outscored the Mustangs by a 21-16 margin over the first 13:35 of the second half for a 52-29 lead with less than five and a half minutes remaining.

Woodbridge had more two point field goals (18-11), and outscored JFK from beyond the arc (9-6), and at the foul line (17-9) to earn the win. Bobby Marquez opened up a 10-8 finish for the Barrons with a pair of free throws before Hughes threw down a two handed jam after taking in a pass from Kyle Anderson (4 points). Hughes then made the bonus free throw for a three point play. The Mustangs got a couple baskets from Buccholz and a bucket from freshman Joe Duffy while Jared Pearson made two layups and made one of two from the line to round out the scoring. The Barrons are looking to earn full township bragging rights when it takes on Colonia on January 14th.

With the victory, Woodbridge improved to 3-5 overall including a 2-3 mark in conference play while Kennedy, which was coming off a tough loss at Bishop Ahr three days earlier, dropped to 1-7 overall including a 0-6 mark in the GMC.
