Elizabeth Hands South Brunswick First Loss While Stevens Routed |
It was a tough night for the two Greater Middlesex Conference teams in the Elizabeth Summer League. As a matter of fact, it was a tough night for all the teams in Central Jersey as in addition to South Brunswick and J.P. Stevens losing, the Immaculata Spartans dropped the only nightcap to Curtis of Staten Island, 47-40. Arriving late because of an earlier game at the Colonia JV Summer League, we arrived with South Brunswick and Elizabeth in the second half of their game while J.P. Stevens and St. Joseph's of Staten Island were approaching halftime of theirs.
South Brunswick, which came into the night playing solid basketball throughout the entire summer, dropped its game with Elizabeth by the final score of 42-34 as the Minutemen broke away from a 25-24 third quarter lead with a 17-10 showing in the final period for the final eight pont winning margin. Meanwhile, J.P. Stevens, which has been up and down so far this summer at Elizabeth, were never really in their game against St. Joseph's of Staten Island as the Hawks were soundly defeated, 56-34.
South Brunswick started out well with a 17-16 lead with only 6:22 left to play in the third quarter. However, Elizabeth, which had talented soon to be senior, Corey Williams leading the way, would take the lead back on two free throws for an 18-17 lead with 6:14 left in the third. About 2:40 later, the Minutemen would increase their lead to three at 20-17 with 3:34 left to play in the period.
Elizabeth increased their lead to 21-17 before the Vikings came back with a score to make the score 21-19 with 2:14 to go. Then, a few moments later, South Brunswick ties the game up at 21-21 with a bucket. The Vikes would take the lead with a three pointer with 0:39 left to make the score 24-23, but Elizabeth would lead after the third, 25-24. Then, to open the fourth, the Minutemen put together a 5-0 run for a 30-24 lead.
South Brunswick would try to get themselves back in the thick of things with a 4-2 spurt to make it 32-28 with 5:10 left to play. However, Elizabeth would boost their lead back to six on a 4-2 run of their own to make the score 36-30 with only two minutes left to play. The Vikings would get no closer than four on a 4-2 run to make it 38-34 as Head Coach, Dave Turco called for time with 0:40 left in the contest. Elizabeth would seal the victory with two pairs of free throws down the stretch for the 42-34 win.
J.P. Stevens wasn't even close in their game against St. Joseph's of Staten Island. The Hawks fell behind, 16-7 in the first quarter as the Hawks were shorthanded without Jason Callender, who also plays baseball, and Kenny Melford, who was playing in a AAU tournament. Stevens, which came off a very tough loss to Hillside on Wednesday night despite getting 27 points from Andrew Biancosino, fell apart in the second period as their opponents from one of New York City's five boroughs went on a 21-6 rampage for an insurrmountable 37-13 halftime lead.
While J.P. Stevens would play better in the second half including an 11-6 showing in the final period, they were just overmatched on this night as both teams are now 3-5 on the season. In the finale, Both Immaculata and Curtis of Staten Island were entangled in a back and forth tussle in the first half before Curtis put together an 8-0 run for a 19-15 lead, and they held that lead despite a 5-4 finish to the half by the Spartans to make the score 23-20 at the half.
Then, in the third quarter, Immaculata's offense hit a wall while Curtis scored the first 11 points of the second half to take a 34-23 lead going into the final period. In the fourth period, the team from Staten Island, and the Public School Athletic League in New York City, increased their lead to the biggest of the game at 43-29 with 4:18 to play on a 7-2 run sparked by a three pointer that pretty much broke Immaculata's spirit after their shooting and pressure defnese cut the deficit to nine at 36-27 with only 6:53 left to play.
In other action, Hillside downed Roselle handily, 47-31 in a battle of two Mountain Valley Conference foes while Nazareth won its fourth straight, 57-38, and Elizabeth rolled past St. Peter's of Staten Island, 54-38. South Brunswick remains in first place by a half game over Hillside, and they also own a tiebreaker over the Comets based on their head to head win in week two of action.
