METUCHEN, NJ--Quenton DeCosey did not disappoint the St. Joe’s faithful Thursday evening. On a night were the senior was honored for reaching the 1,000 point plateau, DeCosey put on a show scoring a game high 24 points to go along with 7 rebounds to lead St. Joe’s to their third win of the season. Karl Towns Jr., the 6’10 freshman made his home debut finishing with 7 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Rob Ukawuba finished with 13 points for East Brunswick.

St. Joe’s spent most of the first half without Towns on the court. Towns ran into early foul trouble in the first quarter which depleted St. Joe’s size for most of the game. St. Joe’s relied heavily on DeCosey for the offense, and DeCosey delivered. The Temple-bound senior scored the teams first 8 points of the game with all of his points coming from inside the arc. East Brunswick was able to keep pace with St. Joe’s however, with Ukawuba, Dan Leung, and Mike Summerer all hitting big shots to keep the Bears in the game. St. Joe’s senior Karim Awad hit two free throws with 30 seconds left into quarter, to tie the game at 12, heading into the first quarter.

Awad opened up the scoring in the second quarter with a lay-up through traffic to give St. Joe’s an early 14-12 lead. Awad would finish with 8 points, with most of them coming from lay-ups. St. Joe’s would add on to their lead with DeCosey and Jimbo Long both hitting three pointers. East Brunswick wouldn’t back down though with Summerer and Ukawuba scoring quick points through the lane and drawing fouls, E.B went into halftime only down by three.

Ukawuba would open the second half with another basket, cutting the Falcons lead to a mere point. DeCosey would spend most of the third quarter on the bench with foul trouble of his own. Luckily St. Joe’s would be sparked by the return of Karl Towns. Towns came up huge after spending most of the first half on the bench. Towns would hit a 3 just 2 minutes into the half, and then end up adding a pair of baskets to add to the lead. Jimbo Long also shined in the third quarter as his defense shut down senior Joe Ross. Ross was averaging over 18 points a game this season, and finished the game with none. Long knew before the game that his matchup with Ross was important noting “I came into the game, knowing I had to contain Joe Ross, knowing if I didn’t it could cost us the game.”

The fourth quarter was all DeCosey. The senior brought the house down early on, with an incredible two handed dunk off a spin move for a ten point lead. Ukawuba and sophomore Amir Bell would continue to keep the St. Joe’s lead to single digits, but DeCosey continued to find ways to put points on the board. St. Joe’s would go on to win the game 49-42, with most of their points coming from the free throw line in the final minutes. St. Joe’s improves to 3-1 while East Brunswick drops to 2-1. St. Joe’s will play at the Jameer Nelson Classic over the holidays while East Brunswick will play at Old Bridge on January 3rd. View the game notes from the contest.
