Round One Of Playoffs Over As McCarrick,
|
The first round of action continued in the Colonia JV Summer League at Colonia High School on Friday night with Woodbridge winning the opening game by forefeit to Middlesex. Then the Junior Eagles of Cardinal McCarrick pulled away from a seven point halftime lead to take a 37-24 lead with 3:28 to play in the game before winning over J.P. Stevens by ten, 38-28.
Finally, in the finale, J.F. Kennedy broke away from a 19-15 lead late in the first half with a 10-2 run going into halftime, and then a 26-11 surge in the second half to take a 55-28 lead with 4:52 remaining. The Junior Mustangs eventually went on to win, 57-33. Arriving in the second half of the McCarrick--J.P. Stevens game, the Eagles sported a ten point, 31-21 lead with 9:09 remaining in the contest.
After about a minute and a half of scoreless action, J.P. Stevens broke the ice with a three pointer to make it a seven point game at 31-24. The Junior Eagles would increase the lead back to nine on a bucket before calling timeout with 6:49 left to play. Emerging from the timeout, McCarrick would increase the lead to 13 by making it a 6-0 run on a basket with less than five minutes to go, and then two free throws at the 3:28 mark to make it a 37-24 score.
The Junior Hawks of Stevens didn't give up though as they put together a 4-1 run to close the game, but it was too little too late as Cardinal McCarrick advanced to the next round, where it will face Colonia in the quarterfinals on Monday night. The Junior Eagles are now 7-3 overall on the summer while J.P. Stevens finishes their summer at 2-7. In the nightcap of the evening, Bishop Ahr ended up playing the same type of game that they did against South Brunswick exactly one week ago.
We say that because like South Brunswick, the Junior Mustangs of Kennedy jumped all over Bishop Ahr with a 7-0 to start the game. The Junior Trojans didn't get their first points of the contest until the sixteen minute mark of the first half. JFK would lead 9-2 shortly afterward, but Ahr would finally get going with a 6-0 burst that was capped with a follow off several offensive rebounds to make the score 9-8 with 11:55 on the clock in the first half.
J.F. Kennedy would reassume control in the battle with a 5-0 run highlighted by a three pointer to make the score 14-8 before the Junior Trojans got a bank shot to fall from Mark Simko to make it 14-10 with 10:30 remaining before intermission. Both teams would exchange four points as Ahr would get one of two free throws to make it 19-15 in favor of Kennedy with 7:35 to play before half.
The next 6:21 saw only six points by both teams as the Junior Mustangs increased their lead to 23-17 on a 4-2 run. However, like last week, Bishop Ahr went on to let J.F. Kennedy score six more points to take a 29-17 lead into the break. Things didn't get any better for Ahr in the second half as JFK built up a 37-24 lead with 14:38 left after the Junior Trojans worked hard to get the lead under double digits with a 7-4 run. Frustrated with the way things were going, Bishop Ahr coach, Rocky Prodoscimo needed to call for time.
However, nothing would stop the Junior Mustangs out of the timeout as Kennedy went on an 18-4 surge that was highlighted by a three point play off of a steal from Ahr's Mike Williamson, who eventually fouled the JFK player on the score. Mark Simko, who only had four points in the game, scored his final points of the contest during the JFK barrage to make it 41-26 with 13:05 to play. The game would then end with Bishop Ahr scoring five of the last seven points to make the final score, 57-33.
With the win, the Junior Mustangs of J.F. Kennedy advanced to the quarterfinal round, where they will take on second seeded South Brunswick, which had a first round by along with Piscataway and Colonia. There will be four quarterfinal games on Monday, July 26th with the first contest getting underway at 5:00 PM. See the latest brackets.

Playoffs Get Underway As Colonia II Rolls |
Regular season action ended, and playoff action began on Thursday night at the Colonia JV Summer League at Colonia High School. With Piscataway getting a win via forefeit by Spotswood, schedule makers were able to get a first round playoff game to be played between Colonia II and South River, which Colonia II won easily, 49-30.
In other action, Colonia easily disposed of J.P. Stevens, 51-24, Cardinal McCarrick won its second in a row by hammering J.F. Kennedy, 51-32, and Franklin downed a South Brunswick squad that consisted of mostly freshmen as the Junior Viking squad was up in Elizabeth playing against the Minutemen in a final regular season game at the Elizabeth Summer League. The first game though saw Cardinal McCarrick get back on the winning track again as the Junior Eagles hammered Middlesex, 63-36.

Piscataway Knocks Off South Brunswick, 36-22 |
The fifth week of action got underway at the Colonia JV Summer League at Colonia High School in the Colonia section of Woodbridge Township on Monday night, and there was a surprise. That surprise was South Brunswick losing their first game of the summer to a Piscataway team that is growing with more and more confidence. The Junior Chiefs won their matchup against a Red Division foe by a 36-22 count.
Piscataway, which won a thrilling game in overtime over Colonia on Friday, knocked South Brunswick from the ranks of the unbeaten with the win. It also helped the Junior Chiefs pull within a game of the league leading Vikings. Meanwhile, Bishop Ahr climbed back up to the .500 level with a 56-48 victory over Blue Division rival, South River, 56-48. Woodbridge won by forefeit to Spotswood, which is no longer in the league, and finally J.F. Kennedy of Iselin defeated Middlesex, 52-25. See the latest standings and scores.
