Colonia JV Summer League--Week Four

Piscataway Wins OT Thriller While South Brunswick Rolls...Again

The fourth week of action completed on Friday night at the Colonia JV Summer League as Piscataway won an overtime thriller over Colonia while South Brunswick continued to play impressively this summer with a lopsided win over Bishop Ahr, 69-38. Meanwhile, in earlier action, J.F. Kennedy of Iselin moved a game over .500 by virtue of their 39-25 victory over South River.

Piscataway, which lost a close battle the night before against another Colonia team, Colonia II, had to overcome a lot in their matchup against Colonia. They had to overcome some tough calls, and a Colonia team that was just amazing from three point range. The Junior Patriots took the early 5-4 lead with 12:57 to go in the first half when Piscataway then went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 9-5 lead with 10:22 to go in the first.

Colonia would respond though with an 8-0 run of their own including a pair of one of two free throw performances at the charity stripe, and then a three pointer to cap the run for a 13-8 Junior Patriot lead with 2:25 to go in the first half. Piscataway then responded with a huge run of their own as the Junior Chiefs went on a 10-4 tear to end the first half to take an 18-17 lead.

In a game that saw an unbelieveable fifteen lead changes, and four ties, Piscataway took the upper hand to start the second half with a three point play to increase their lead to four at 21-17. Then, after calling a timeout with 17:16 to play, and a 23-19 lead, the Junior Chiefs went up by six with a 4-2 run to make the score 27-21 before Colonia answered with a 5-0 run to make the score 27-26 with 13:27 to go in the game.

The Junior Patriots then seized the lead for the first time since the two minute mark of the first half on a three pointer from deep along the left wing to cap a 5-2 run for a 31-29 lead with 12:18 remaining. The Junior Chiefs came right back with a 4-2 run to tie things up at 33-33 with 8:40 to go. Colonia then struck again with another 5-2 spurt capped by a three pointer with 5:23 to play to make the score 38-35. Piscataway would rally back despite missing a three pointer to take a one point, 39-38 lead with about three minutes to play on a 4-0 run.

Colonia would quickly take the lead back on a three pointer with 2:26 left to go, and after Piscataway called for time with 2:16 left, the Junior Chiefs would tie the Junior Patriots at 41-41 on an offensive rebound and putback with exactly two minutes to play. A few seconds later, the Junior Chiefs took the lead again on one of two free throws from the charity stripe for a 42-41 lead with 1:38 remaining. With the game continuing to go back and forth, the Junior Patriots took the lead again on a jumper from the left wing to make it 43-42 with 1:19 to go in regulation.

On the very next possession, Piscataway came right back down the floor for a score to retake the lead at 44-43 lead with 1:08 to play. After the Junior Pats missed the front end of a one and one with a little less than a minute to play, they then got a three pointer from just right of the top of the key to take a 46-44 lead with 30.6 seconds left in the game. However, the Junior Chiefs fought back, and despite appearing to get fouled hard, a Piscataway player managed to get the offensive rebound and putback to tie the score again at 46-46 with 18.4 seconds to play.

Colonia would get a final chance, but after calling a timeout with 2.9 seconds to play, the Junior Patriots were only able to get a shot off from deep in their own backcourt as the game went into overtime. In the extra session, Piscataway jumped out to an early 48-46 lead on two free throws with 1:32 to go in the overtime. Colonia would then take its last lead of the game on another three pointer from the right side of the floor for a 49-48 score with only 1:02 left to play in the extra session.

The Junior Chiefs would then take the lead for good with 22.9 seconds to play on another offensive rebound and putback as they used their athleticism, and relentless pursuit of the basketball to get a number of offensive rebounds and scores throughout the contest. Leading now 50-49, Piscataway then called timeout with ten seconds left. After the timeout, Piscataway helped put the game away with one of two free throws with 6.8 seconds to make the final score 51-49.

The final game of the evening had the potential to be just as much of a barnburner as Bishop Ahr hung tough in the first half against South Brunswick. The Junior Vikings had jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 15:30 to play in the first half, and increased the lead to ten on a 4-2 spurt to make it 12-2 with 14:20 to play in the opening half as Ahr's coach, Rocky Prodocismo called timeout. Coming out of that timeout, Bishop Ahr went on an 18-10 run over the next 11:11 to close the gap to 22-20 with 3:29 to go in the half.

After a disgruntled South Brunswick coach, Mike Zirpolo, called timeout, the Junior Vikings switched back from a zone defense to man to man, which resulted in a 14-4 run capped by a three pointer at the buzzer by Brian Morgan to raise the lead back to 36-24 at halftime. One bright spot for the Junior Trojans in the first half was the play of Mark Simko, who also plays for the Cardinal McCarrick Blue Devils down in the Raritan Bay Summer League in South Amboy. Simko collected 10 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist in perhaps his best game of the summer at Colonia.

Morgan continued his sharp shooting in the second half as he capped a 5-0 run to open the half with another three pointer. South Brunswick, which actually went on a 37-8 rampage from the 3:29 mark of the first half, when they only lead 22-20, to the 7:38 mark of the second half when they capped a 13-2 spurt for a 59-28 lead, were never really threatened after the first half run by Ahr, and won the game decisively, 69-38 to remain unbeaten at 7-0 on the summer. Simko ended up with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists for BGA, which dropped to 3-4 on the summer. See the latest standings and scores.

Colonia JV Summer League--Week Four

Franklin Edges Shorthanded Cardinal McCarrick

There were only three games played on the schedule at the Colonia JV Summer League on Thursday night. Originally, there were supposed to be four games played, but because Spotswood dropped out of the league earlier in the week, Bishop Ahr won its scheduled contest with the Chargers by forefeit. So, the next game on the night was the opening act as Franklin won a hard fought battle over a Cardinal McCarrick ballclub that refused to lay down and die despite only having six players available.

The Junior Warriors held off the Junior Eagles by a 50-45 count. Meanwhile, in the other two later games, both Colonia teams won in their contests. Colonia I defeated crosstown rival Woodbridge by a 54-38 score while Colonia II downed Piscataway, 48-45. As a result, Colonia moved closer in the standings behind league leading and still undefeated South Brunswick with a 6-2 overall record. Back to our featured game, the Junior Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on two free throws with 19:30 left in the first half.

McCarrick, which started the game defensively with a 2-3 zone, made a four point play with 17:20 to go on a three pointer off the glass, and a free throw after being fouled on ths shot to take an 8-3 lead. Franklin would cut into the lead over the next three minutes despite the fact that the Junior Eagle players were doing a solid job of pushing the ball up the floor, and running the offense with good ball movement.

The Junior Warriors then took their first lead of the game with a 6-0 burst over the next 3:25 to make the score 12-10 before McCarrick got one of two free throws to pull within one at 12-11 with 11:55 remaining in the opening half. Franklin then increased their lead to six with a 7-2 spurt over the next 5:02 to make the score read 19-13 with 6:53 to go before intermission. Both teams would score four points each before the Junior Warriors called for time.

With the score 23-17, Franklin came out of its time out a bit shaky as the Junior Eagles climbed to within three points of the lead at 25-22. However, the Junior Warriors came up with a big three point play with 26.1 seconds remaining in the half after McCarrick failed to cut the lead to one. The play put Franklin up by six again at 28-22 as we went into the halftime break. In the second half, Cardy Mac came out pounding the boards as they got numerous offensive rebounds, and some putbacks to highlight a 5-2 run to make the score 30-27 with 17:18 left to play.

Franklin regained control of the game though with a 6-1 spurt capped by a fast break layup to make it 36-28 in favor of the Junior Warriors with 13:27 left. Cardinal McCarrick never quit though as they went on a 7-2 run over the next 4:12 to cut the lead to three at 38-35 at the 9:15 mark as the Junior Warriors called for time. McCarrick wasn't done there either as they proceeded to cut the deficit further with a 4-2 run over the next 3:38 to make the score 40-39 with just 5:37 remaining in regulation.

The Junior Warriors pushed the lead back to one on a 3-0 run over the next couple minutes before the Junior Eagles got a three point play off a steal, off balanced layup, and free throw to cut the deficit again to one at 43-42. Franklin then called a timeout a few seconds later with 2:37 left to play. Coming out of the timeout, Franklin forced the Junior Eagles to take a tough shot, which they missed. The Junior Warriors then pushed the lead back to three on a score at the other end to make it 45-42 with 1:20 left.

Cardy Mac had their chances to pull closer, or even tie the game up, but missed a front end of a one and one, and then threw the ball away after an offensive rebound off the missed foul shot. They were able, however, to get the ball back after stopping Franklin on the Junior Warriors next possession. The team from Somerset County, and the Skyland Conference was able to increase their lead to six on one of two free throws with 38.5 seconds to go, and then two free throws with 26.6 seconds to go that made the score 48+42.

While Cardinal McCarrick would get closer again with a three pointer at the 14.5 second mark, the Junior Eagles were unable to get any closer as Franklin would get an offensive rebound off a missed front end of a one and one with 7.8 seconds to play, and then sealed the win with two free throws at the 2.6 left to shape the final, 50-45 margin. With the win, Franklin pulled to withiin a game and a half of South Brunswick while McCarrick dropped to 4-3 overall after starting out 4-0. See the latest standings and scores.

Colonia JV Summer League--Week Four

Some Shockers Highlight Wednesday Night Action

The fourth week of action continued at the Colonia JV Summer League over at Colonia High School on Wednesday night, and there were several shockers. One thing does remain constant though, at least for the time being, and that is that South Brunswick remains undefeated at 6-0 by virtue of a 50-28 victory over Middlesex.

In the meantime, the only other undefeated team at Colonia, Franklin, lost to Colonia II in a big upset, 40-29. Meanwhile, J.F. Kennedy even its record on the season with another upset over a Woodbridge squad that had been playing quite well so far this summer, 42-32. Finally, J.P. Stevens had their two game winning streak stopped as South River also evened its record at 3-3 with a 37-27 win over the Junior Hawks. See the latest standings and scores.

Colonia JV Summer League--Week Four

Stevens Wins Second Straight In Big Way, 46-26

The fourth week of action began at the Colonia JV Summer League over at Colonia High School on Monday night, and for the second consecutive night, the J.P. Stevens Junior Hawks came up with a victory. This time it was a much easier task as Stevens rolled to a 46-26 victory over still winless Middlesex.

Meanwhile, Colonia I defeated crosstown rival, J.F. Kennedy of Iselin by a 52-38 count, and the other Colonia team, Colonia II lost to another crosstown rival, Woodbridge, 55-48. Another game between South River and Spotswood resulted in a South River win by virtue of a forefeit by the Chargers.

As a matter of fact, the big news out of Monday's action was that Spotswood had dropped out of the league making it the latest team to leave after South Plainfield withdrew over a week ago. See the latest standings and scores.
