Colonia JV Summer League--Week Three

Colonia Rolls Past Ahr While JPS Goes Overtime To Win 1st

It was another respectable night for two of the three Woodbridge Township schools that were in action on the final night of the third week of games at the Colonia JV Summer League. After South Brunswick squeaked past South River, 52-50 in the opening game of a Friday night tripleheader, the Colonia Patriots jumped out to a 33-16 lead with 4:27 to go in the first half, and were never really threatened as an out of sync Bishop Ahr squad was unable to get the lead under nine points as the Junior Patriots won easily, 62-43.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap, a hard fought game developed between J.P. Stevens and J.F. Kennedy of Iselin after the Junior Mustangs fell behind early 8-0 in the first half. Kennedy outscored the Junior Hawks 29-21 the rest of the way, and had an opportunity to win the game in regulation, but was unable to get a decent shot off as the game went to overtime. Then, with 1:07 remaining in the extra session, J.P. Stevens got one of two free throws, and then held off the Junior Mustangs for the 32-31 victory as JFK committed two turnovers within an 11.1 second time span.

With the win, J.P. Stevens earned its first victory of the summer against four defeats while JFK dropped to 2-2. Colonia raised its record to 4-1, and a game behind league leading South Brunswick, which is undefeated at 5-0. In the first game, after Colonia had taken a commanding 17 point lead with a bit less than four and a half minutes remaining in the opening half, Bishop Ahr reduced the deficit to just ten on a 9-2 spurt over a 3:42 span to make it 35-25 with 4:27 to go before intermission.

However, the Junior Patriots closed the first half scoring with four of the last six points to grab a 39-27 lead at the break. At the start of the second half, the Junior Trojans opened the scoring with a three pointer, and had a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to 41-32 with 14:54 to go in the contest. That would be the closest that Bishop Ahr would get as Colonia then went on a 6-0 run over the next 2:07 to take a 47-32 lead with 12:47 left to play.

The Junior Patriots weren't done there. They went on a 9-2 burst that included a three pointer at the 10:13 mark, and a steal and fast break basket to cap the run at the 7:50 mark for an insurrmountable 56-34 lead as Ahr coach Rocky Prodocismo called for time. The Junior Trojans would attempt to make the game a bit more respectable as they went on a 7-0 tear over the next 4:06 to cut the deficit to 15 at 56-41, but Colonia closed out the game with a 7-2 run for a 62-43 victtory.

In our final game of the night, J.P. Stevens appeared to be ready to run away with its first win of the summer as they clamped down on defense, and showed tremendous hustle to take an 8-0 lead before the Junior Mustangs got their first points of the game on a layup while being fouled with 9:26 to go in the first half. JFK missed the chance to get the conventional three point play, and Stevens then went on a 5-2 run to make it 13-4 with just three minutes to go in the opening half.

However, you couldn't keep the Junior Mustangs down for long. The combination of their tough defense along with finally getting shots to fall propelled JFK to close the half with six of the last eight points on two three pointers for a 15-10 J.P. Stevens lead at the break. The second half started with the Junior Hawks increasing the lead again to seven on a layup with 18:35 to go in the contest for a 17-10 lead as JFK's Jamie Panko called timeout to regroup his troops.

Out of the timeout, J.F. Kennedy went on a 6-0 run including a basket with 15:15 to play, and another with 13:38 to go that made the score 17-16. A little bit more than a minute and a half later, Kennedy tied the game up for the first time in the contest to make the score 18-18 with exactly 12:00 to go. From that point on until the end of the game including overtime, there were six lead changes, and three ties. Kennedy actually grabbed its first lead of the entire game with 11:27 to go as they capped a 20-10 surge since 10:09 mark of the first half with the 20-18 lead.

J.P. Stevens would come back to tie, and then retake the lead on an 8-2 tear to make the score 26-22 before JFK came back with a big three pointer to draw within one again at 26-25 with 4:15 to play in regulation. The Junior Mustangs then wrestled the lead back from the Junior Hawks on a 4-2 run over the next 2:25 to take a 29-28 lead with just 1:10 to play in regulation. The Junior Hawks would come back to tie the game after getting a huge steal following a turnover on the offensive end.

Capitalizing on the steal, Stevens went in for a layup attempt where they were fouled on the play. They then got one of two free throws at the charity stripe to square the game at 29-29 with 29.7 seconds left. Nevertheless, JFK had the ball, and a chance to pull out the game with a last shot. However, a Junior Mustang player lost track of how much time was left on the clock, and Kennedy was unable to get a good shot off as time expired in regulation, and we went to overtime.

In the extra session, JFK drew first blood with a score at the 1:37 mark to lead, 31-29. The Junior Mustangs had a chance to increase the lead, and perhaps put the game away on the very next possession, but they were unable to convert a layup when the player, who wasn't aware where he was with respect to the basket, miseed the attempt on the close shot right underneath the backboard. With new life, the Junior Hawks seized the opportunity, and tied the game with 1:23 left in the extra period on a running one handed shot along the right basekline for a 31-31 tie.

Then, the Junior Hawks grabbed the lead for good with the one of two free throws at the foul line with 1:07 left to play, and then went on to hold off Kennedy with defensive stops that produced two turnovers down the last half minute of the game. Despite that, Kennedy still managed to get a last second chance when JPS missed the front end of a one and one with 8.9 to go in overtime, but the Junior Mustangs missed a three point attempt from the left wing as time expired. South Brunswick's Second Half Surge Puts Away Stevens, 41-22

Week three action continued in the Colonia JV Summer League at Colonia High School on Thursday night as South Brunswick squared off against Red Division rival, J.P. Stevens. After a tightly played first half, which saw J.P. Stevens close to within three points at 19-16 at the break on a 10-6 run, South Brunswick turned on the jets in the second half with a suffocating defense, and much more efficient offense.

The Junior Vikes surged past Stevens with a 22-6 showing in the second half, to win the game easily 41-22. As a result, South Brunswick remains on top of the standings with a 4-0 record overall on the summer. The Junior Hawks are still winless at 0-4. The first 11:20 of the contest saw South Brunswick jump out in front with a 13-6 showing. The Junior Vikings then increased the lead to eight on a free throw before JPS called for time with 7:55 remaining in the opening half.

Coming out of the timeout, the Junior Hawks collected themselves, and put together a run to close the half. It started with a 5-0 spurt over a 5:06 span to cut the lead down to three at 14-11 as South Brunswick called timeout with 2:49 to go before intermission. Both teams then ended the half with five points each to make the score 19-16 at the break. South Brunswick, which had a limited roster of players at the game, regrouped for the start of the second half.

The Junior Vikings again started out slowly, but got a jumper from the right foul line by soon to be sophomore, Brian Morgan, extended to increase the lead to 21-16 with 16:07 left to play in the game as Stevens' coach, Dan Kelly, called for time. Then, over the next 3:31, South Brunswick rattled off five more points including an offensive rebound and putback following two missed free throws to take a 26-16 lead with 12:36 remaining. The Junior Vikes then continued their run with a 6-2 spurt to make it a 32-18 score with 8:24 to go.

South Brunswick then finally closed out the game with a 9-4 run to round out the final score. After the game, some of the South Brunswick players including Morgan, then traveled up to Elizabeth to play in one of the nightcap games at the Elizabeth Summer League, where they made big contributions in the Vikings fourth consecutive win of the summer their, a 53-34 rout over Nazareth of the New York Catholic League.
