McCarrick Wins Battle of Unbeatens, 49-45 |
It was quite a chaotic night at Colonia High School as the second week of action concluded with Cardinal McCarrick remaining on top of the standings with a 49-45 victory over Blue Division rival Bishop Ahr in a battle of two undefeated teams. Meanwhile, South Brunswick won by forefeit over South Plainfield, Woodbridge downed Middlesex, 37-25, and Franklin continued its impressive defensive play by defeating J.P. Stevens 29-18 in the nightcap.
However, it was the Cardinal McCarrick-Bishop Ahr matchup that stole the show as the Eagles continued to play their very helter skelter up tempo game, and the Junior Trojans were unable to get themselves to slow Cardy Mac down. Bishop Ahr did get out in front early by scoring at the 18:48 mark of the first half with a three point play. The Junior Eagles would tie things up at 5-5 on a 5-2 run over the next 2:57.
Then, after getting a score to retake the lead at 7-5, Bishop Ahr called for a timeout with 12:54 to go in the first half. About a couple minutes later, following the timeout, Cardinal McCarrick trimmed the lead to one at 7-6 with one of two free throws at the 10:50 mark. Bishop Ahr increased the lead to three at 9-6, but had to use another timeout with 8:51 remaining in the half because McCarrick's pressure almost made the Junior Trojans commit a five second violation.
Following the timeout, and over the next 4:33, Bishop Ahr went on an 8-4 spurt to take control with 17-10 lead. However, McCarrick was still causing problems with their pressure defense, and fast paced offensive game, but just couldn't hit shots. Then, the close of the half saw shots starting to fall for McCarrick and their pressure began to make the Junior Trojans wither and wilt, much to the dismay of their coach, Rocky Prodoscimo. Consequently, the Junior Eagles were able to end the half with a 7-2 spurt to cut the Junior Trojan lead to 19-17 at the break.
The second half saw the Junior Eagles pick up right where they left off with a 4-0 spurt to build up an 11-2 surge from the end of the first half for a 21-19 lead, McCarrick's first of the game. Cardy Mac was able to do it by continuing to push up the basketball while the Bishop Ahr was unable to get their full court defense set up in time to slow the Junior Eagles down. And, McCarrick wasn't done yet. The Junior Eagles made it a 10-0 run to start the half with six more points for a 27-19 lead with 16:25 left to play.
BGA was able to stop the bleeding and cut into their newly found deficit with a 3-0 run to make it 27-22 with 14:47 to go. Then, Bishop Ahr made it a 12-5 spurt with a 9-5 run to make the score 32-31 with 10:05 to play. However, the Junior Eagles of Cardinal McCarrick converted a three point play to make the score 35-31 with exactly ten minutes left to play. Both teams then scored four points each over the next 3:38 to keep McCarrick with a a four point lead at 39-35 at the 6:22 mark of the second half.
The Junior Eagles increased their lead to six with a 4-2 spurt to take a 43-37 lead with 5:09 left to play as timeout was called. Bishop Ahr then trimmed the lead back to four at 45-41 with a 4-2 run of their own over the next 3:07 as the Junior Eagles called for time with just 2:02 left on the clock. Coming out of the timeout, it appeared that Cardinal McCarrick did not take advantage because they ended up taking an ill advised shot with 1:30 left, but on the following possession, Bishop Ahr was unable to take advantage as they turned the ball over.
From there, McCarrick was able to keep the Junior Trojans at bay with a 4-2 run to take a insurrmountable six point, 49-43 lead with 12.4 seconds left. Bishop Ahr closed out the scoring with a couple free throws with about five seconds remaining. With the victory, Cardinal McCarrick went into the July 4th holiday weekend break with sole possession of first place by a half game over Franklin and South Brunswick, at 4-0 while Bishop Ahr drops to 2-1.
