Junior Vikings Win Nailbiter For Championship, 55-53 |
In a game that went down to the wire, South Brunswick got went 10 of 13 in the second half at the charity stripe while Franklin went only 5 of 12 as the Junior Vikings were able to pull out a close win down the stretch, 55-53 for the 2004 Colonia JV Summer League Championship.
Arriving at the half, we only had statistics for several players in the second half only. Devon Young led the way for the Junior Vikes with 10 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal while Mike Micheck chipped in with 9 points, 3 assists, and a steal. Brian Morgan and Mike Sobers also chipped in as well as Morgan collected four points, 3 rebounds, and an assist in the second half while Sobers added 2 points, 3 rebounds, and an assist.
Arman Wilson also helped out the Vikings cause with solid work on the boards, and great hustle. With the Vikings leading 24-21 at the half, South Brunswick opened the second half with a threee point play by Micheck to give the Junior Vikings a 27-21 lead with 19:10 to go in the game. The Junior Warriors, the fourth seed in this year's tourney, responded with a 7-2 burst to close within one at 29-28 with 16:21 to play.
Then, Franklin tied the game up with a three pointer that capped a 5-4 showing over a 2:04 span to make the score 33-33 with 14:17 to play. The game remained that way for the next 2:39 as both teams tightened up their defenses until Franklin took the lead on a nice drive with 11:38 remaining to make the score 35-33. Moreover, on a later possession, South Brunswick's John Perry-Okonny missed a chance to tie the game again by failing to connect on both free throws with 10:45 to play as the score still stood at 35-33.
Both teams still struggled to score points over the next 1:20 before Mike Micheck connected on a three pointer off an assist by Mike Sobers to give the Vikings the lead again at 36-35 with 9:25 left. Sobers not only made a great pass, but set up the whole play with a huge offensive rebound. While there were only two lead changes and a tie in the second half, the game was close throughout. Nevertheless, South Brunswick managed to get some breathing room on a 7-2 burst capped by 1 of 2 free throws by Micheck for a 43-37 lead with 6:25 to play.
Franklin would outscore South Brunswick 3-2 over the next 2:50 before calling timeout with 3:35 to play, and the Junior Vikings clinging to a tenuous five point lead at 45-40. Coming out of the timeout, the Junior Warriors would draw closer with another score before Devon Young started the free throw parade for South Brunswick with two from the charity stripe with only 1:50 left to play to make the score 47-42. Ten seconds later, Franklin, which deployed full court pressure, got a steal and score to cut the lead back down to three at 47-44.
However, South Brunswick, which hit all eight of its free throws over the final two minutes of the game, increased the lead back to five on two foul shots by Brian Morgan to make it 49-44 with 1:28 to play. Then the two teams exchanged baskets as Franklin got a hoop with a minute to play, and then moments later South Brunswick got a huge basket by Young off a nice pass from forward Vinnish to make it 51-46 with only 47 seconds to play. Desperate to get back into the game, the Junior Warriors managed to get a three pointer off a missed free throw with 35.9 seconds to play to make it a two point game at 51-49.
However, South Brunswick would get some breathing room with 30.8 ticks on the clock as Young struck again with two free throws to make it a two possession game at 53-49. Franklin countered to keep themselves in the game with two of their own from the charity stripe to make it 53-51 with 21.5 remaining in regulation. Finally, Brian Morgan sealed the deal with two free throws with 10.1 seconds to play to make the score 55-51. Franklin would get two free throws with 1.6 seconds to play, but it was too little too late as the Junior Vikings won the Championship. See the final brackets.

South Brunswick Rolls Once More Behind Young, Micheck, and Morgan |
Despite only having a roster of seven kids with one arriving toward the end of the first half, second seeded South Brunswick still managed to pull away from a 28-23 halftime lead with a 21-9 showing in the second half for a solid 49-32 victory over seventh seeded J.F. Kennedy of Iselin by the score of 49-32 in the quarterfinal round of the JV Summer League at Colonia High School on Monday night.
Devon Young led the way for the Junior Vikings with a double double of 13 points and 20 rebounds. His yeoman like effort also collected four assists and four steals. Mike Micheck also chipped in with a fine all around effort consisting of 14 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals while only making three turnovers. Brian Morgan led all South Brunswick scorers with 16 points including three treys and a conventional three point play along with 8 rebounds, 2 steals, a block and an assist.
Despite their struggles at the foul line, and Kennedy's ability to hang in there in the first half, the Junior Viking defense began to wear the Junior Mustangs down, and that opened things up in the second half. Between the oustanding effor on the boards by Young and Morgan as well as other South Brunswick players, and the fine passing by both Micheck and Young, South Brunswick executed extremely well on both sides of the ball in the second half.
On top of all that was the trademark South Brunswick defense that we've seen all summer long, which held JFK to only nine points in the second half, and only 11 in the game's final 21:26, which goes back to late in the first half when Kennedy pulled within two points at 23-21. Prior to that, the game went pretty much back and forth for much of the first half.
South Brunswick got out to the early lead as Morgan opened the scoring at the 18:30 mark with one of his three pointers on the night. But, JFK would answer with a 6-0 run to take a 6-3 at the 15:40 mark. The next 2:10 saw the Junior Vikes tie the game up at 8-8 with a 5-2 spurt highlighted by a layup and three pointer by Micheck, and then Kennedy retook the lead with a 4-0 run to make it 12-8 with 13:30 to play.
The Junior Vikes then took the lead back with a 6-0 burst to make it 14-12 before South Brunswick coach, Mike Zirpolo called a timeout at the 11:02 mark of the first half. Coming out of the timeout, Kennedy was actually the team that regrouped, and retook the lead on another 4-0 run to make it 16-14 with 9:20 left to play. On South Brunswick's very next possession, Micheck scored on a layup to tie the game again at 16-16 with 9:12 to play in the half.
The Junior Vikings took control of the game for a bit as they went on a 7-2 run highlighted by one of two free throws by Micheck for a 17-16 lead with 8:30 to play before the break, and a three pointer by Morgan to cap the run, and make it 23-18 with 4:40 to go in the half. Both teams offenses went dormant for a bit until the 1:26 mark of the first half when JFK struck for a three pointer to tighten the game up again at 23-21 in favor of South Brunswick.
From that point on, South Brunswick dominated with a 26-11 showing the rest of the way. It started with a 5-2 run to close the half as Morgan struck for another three pointer, and Young and Micheck came together and made a nice give and go play for a Micheck basket to make it 28-23 at halftime. Picking right up where they left off, South Brunswick opened the second half scoring with a 6-0 burst capped by a nice drive to the basket by Morgan for a score to make it 34-23 with 14:48 to play in the contest.
The next 3:48 saw the Junior Vikings increase their lead with a 5-3 run to make the score 39-26 with 11:00 left to play. Then, with nine minutes to play in the game, South Brunswick got another big play from Brian Morgan as he got a conventional three point play on a layup as he was fouled, and the free throw to make it 42-28. After that, the closest JFK would get was 45-30 after that as South Brunswick just ran out the clock for a 49-32 win.
With the victory, South Brunswick advanced to the semifinals, where it will take on one of the Colonia teams, third seeded Colonia I, which had to work overtime to defeat a very tough opponent in Cardinal McCarrick, 56-50. Meanwhile, the other Colonia squad, Colonia II, won its game over top seeded Piscataway, 52-32. The win marked the second time this summer that Colonia defeated Piscataway. Colonia II will take on Franklin, which downed Woodbridge, 50-37 in the nightcap. See the latest brackets.
