Dunellen Overcomes Difficulties To Win Championship, 43-32 |
Despite a woeful 12 of 32 performance at the foul line, and a sluggish offense, the Dunellen Destroyers managed to get the victory over the Manville Mustangs in the Championship Game of the Bound Brook Outdoor Summer League in Bound Brook late Friday afternoon. Kyle Lendach, who scored all of his seven points in the second half including a three pointer, sank four straight free throws down the stretch to help Dunellen get the 43-32 victory.
Soon to be senior, Todd DeNapoli led the way for Dunellen, which also lost recently in the quarterfinal round of the Middlesex County College Summer League Tournament to St. Joseph's on Tuesday, with 14 points including six in a key 9-0 first half run that helped the Destroyers gain a 19-14 halftime advantage. Center Tim Sweeney, who had his share of difficulties throughout the contest, still managed to work hard, and get eight points along with a bunch of rebounds to chip in.
Dean Hoski also helped out for the Destroyers, who were 15-9 overall this past season, with five points including a trey of his own. Dunellen, which has been doing a lot of its scoring fromt the perimeter, had difficulties getting on track especially in the first half when they fell behind early 4-1 with about fifteen minutes or so remaining in the half. However, behind a 6-3 spurt, Dunellen was able to tie the game at 7-7 with approximately 11:30 to go in the opening half.
Manville, which reached the Central Jersey Group I Championship in the 2002-2003 season before losing to Dunellen's arch rival the past several years in the Gold Division, Piscataway Vo-Tech, reasserted themselves, and took the lead, with a bucket to make it 9-7 at the ten minute mark, and then another score at the 8:30 mark to make it 11-7. Then, behind six points from DeNapoli, Dunellen was able to go on a 9-0 tear to take the lead at 16-11 with 3:10 as timeout was called.
After the timeout, both teams closed out the first half scoring with three points each to make the score 19-14 in favor of Dunellen at the break. In the second half, Manville opened with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 19-19 with 15:54 to go in the contest as Dunellen called for time. Coming out of the timeout, Dunellen did what Coach Steve Kania loves to do, and that was to get their big man, Tim Sweeney involved, and it paid off with a layup as he was fouled.
However, Sweeney missed the chance to get the three point play as the Destroyers were having tremendous difficulty getting at the charity stripe throughout the contest. In the first half, Dunellen was 7 of 18 at the charity stripe after starting out 6 of their first 8 or so. In the second half, the free throw woes continued as they went 1 of 10 to start the half, and were 8 of 28 overall going into the game's final minute.
With the game now at 21-19 in favor of Dunellen after Sweeney's missed free throw at the 15:30 mark, Manville came down and tied the game right back up again at 21-21 with 15:15 to play. Manville would never tie the game again because the Destroyers went on a decisive 16-4 surge that was sparked by a big three pointer by Kyle Lendach at the 14:30 mark, and helped along by a couple scores by DeNapoli, who added eight more points in the second half, to make the score 37-25 with 2:30 to play.
The Mustangs, who compete in the Mountain Valley Conference, tried to rally with a 7-0 spurt including a three pointer to make the score 37-32 with 1:10 to go in the game. However, it was Lendach, who sealed the victory for the Destroyers with a pair of free throws at around the 50 second mark, and another pair at the 35 second mark. Dunellen got another two points to round out the final, 43-32 score to win the Championship.
